Guitar Analysis: Understanding Different Parts of Guitar

Guitars are composed of tonewoods, strings, hardware, and electronics and all work together to create a music machine. Each guitar is a little different but there are three fundamental parts- the headstock, the neck, the body. This short article will explain all parts and their components. Let’s have a look at Fender Guitar Parts.

1. Headstock

(A) Headstock : The headstock sits at the top of the neck of the guitar where the tuning machines and nut are installed.

(B) Tuning Machines/Tuning Posts : On the standard guitar, there are tuning machines that include tuning posts to hold each string in place. Tuning pegs are used to turn to adjust the tuning.

(C) Nut : The nut is a jagged piece of plastic where the headstock meets the fretboard of the guitar. The nut has notches where the strings are settled. With the help of these notches, the strings are aligned on the fretboard and play an important role in the string height. It makes a critical contribution to the tone and it is the endpoint of the strings.

2. Neck

The neck of the guitar is long and a thin piece of wood between the headstock and the body where you will find the fretboard, truss rod, and frets. Necks are attached to the body with bolts and glues.

(D) Fret Board

The fretboard is attached to the top of the neck of the guitar and is usually made from tonewoods like rosewood, maple, or ebony to prevent dents. It is a separate piece of wood from the neck and maybe the same and different type of wood.

(E) Frets

Frets are the metal strips that are run across the fretboard. When the string is pressed down behind the fret, it changes the length of the strings and produces a different note.

(F) Truss Rod

It is a long and adjustable piece of metal that is mounted inside the neck and runs the length of the neck. It helps to keep blending under the tension of the strings. This rod is essential for any good setup and helps to eliminate things like intonation issues, fret buzz, and other problems.

3. Body

The body of the guitar plays an important part in the tonal characteristics of guitar instruments. Let’s take a look at the Fender Guitar Parts.

(G) Cutaway

It allows the player to easily reach the highest fret positions on the neck.

(H) Upper Bout

It is also the part of the guitar body that is nearest to the neck.

(I) Lower Bout

It is the largest part of the guitar body and nearest to the string at the bridge.

(J) Pickup Selector Switch

If your guitar has multiple pickups, the pickup selector switch allows you to engage single and multiple pickups and gives you the ability to access a wide range of tones.
